Spring Dinner Highlights
Saturday May 5th was Oak Table's 4th Spring Fundraising Dinner. It was a wonderful celebration with delicious food and entertainment. Two hundred and seventy five tickets were sold to support Oak Table. Those in attendance were treated to a soft launch of the new Augustine Centre Project which will include a partnership between Oak Table, S.P.L.A.S.H. Child Care, NaFro Dance and Augustine United Church. Guests heard this partnership will lead the redevelopment which will result in new space for Oak Table. Eveline Cruise and Betty Sanguin, cherished Oak Table volunteers, were honoured for their dedicated service and leadership they provided as Team Leads at Oak Table. Their contribution to the Oak Table reflects their life of "giving back" to others. Many of their friends and family were in attendance to share & celebrate the occasion. Eveline and Betty shared their story of the joy they receive in volunteering at Oak Table and seeing it evolve and grow as an organization.
Our Executive Director took us on a visual journey of our current space and the transformation that will come with our new space. There was a thunderous applause when she described the plans for a dignity washroom and shower for guests. So many of our Oak Table guests don't have regular access to shower, or a public washroom. Most businesses require that you buy something before giving access to their washroom and/or don't have public washrooms at all. The details described made it evident how much thought went into the needs of the people Oak Table serves; from the sloped entrance without stairs, to the residential rather than institutional ambiance planned for the kitchen. It was obvious that the new space will take our programs to the next level, offering dedicated space for literacy and computer training; health programs; foot-care; art; as well as a book nook; laundry room, storage for hygiene items and much more!
Les Wiens, from Les Wiens & Associates Private Wealth Management, donated $1000, and those in attendance were able to enter a draw for the tax receipt by making a donation to Oak Table. One table of friends challenged the other tables, offering to match donations up to $1200 for each table that donated $100. The money quickly flowed, well surpassing the challenged amount.
